A Few Additions…

Here’s a few more things we’ve added to our redecoration project:

We still have several things to add/change.  We want to replace those olive-y green sheets, add some bedside tables or shelves, and maybe bring in a small bookcase also.  We’re going little-by-little though.  Those pictures above the bed were borrowed from the living room (and I like them much better in the bedroom) and the panels were on sale at Target for $7.48 a piece– they’re white, if you can’t tell again from my horrible lighting.  The mirror was also an Ikea find.

There’s also one more addition:

What we’ve been up to…

Well, we had quite the busy weekend, much busier than we’d anticipated! It was great though, and lots of things got accomplished.  We began the process of redecorating our bedroom which has been a long time coming!  Here’s a little bit of the back story:  We live in a small (about 850 sq ft), two bedroom, one bathroom apartment.  While both bedrooms are pretty big, compared to other places, one is clearly larger than the other.  Which is why my husband and I chose that one as ours.

When we moved in, we decided to tackle all of the decorative tasks one room at a time, beginning with the girls’ bedroom (which, when we moved in, there was only one girl).  The room was painted bright yellow with a red and white striped border running right under the ceiling.  Along with that, I painted a few images of The Cat in The Hat and Little Cats A,B, and C on some of the walls.  It was great for a child’s room.  Bright, fun, and inspiring!  But after squeezing two kids (and toys and furniture) into that room, we realized that we would either need to move into a place with more space or give up the big space if we wanted to continue expanding this family.  We chose the latter.

We think it was a great choice.  We don’t plan on moving from where we are now until we move into a house  and we’ve never been the kind of family that thinks “bigger is better”.  We’re pretty minimalistic people, and we enjoy the challenge of making a small space work more efficiently over the challenge of not letting a large space feel under-used.  At least, that’s the way I’d like to think!

So, switching rooms with our kids was no big deal.  They clearly needed more space than we did– the size of our apartment means we have to house a bedroom, playroom and reading nook all in the same space.  Plus, have space enough for at least 2 more kids to fit in there comfortably!  But I tell ya, I did NOT like sleeping in a room with black cats in hats all over the walls.  I would always wake up thinkin someone was hovering over me!  The Cat (and his friends) had to go.

And go they did!

This shows a bit of where we were coming from and where we were going with things.  We traded in the yellow walls for an eggplant purple accent wall and painted the three remaining walls tan.

(The wall still looks yellow with the horrible lighting, but that’s the new tan!)

We also got a new bed; gotta love Ikea!

More updates as the room comes together!

One More…

Had to do one more!

Yarn Along: A Sleeve

Happy Wednesday! Although, honestly, I’m feeling a little drowsy myself. Anyhoo, it’s yarn along day, and I’m participating again!

What’s that ridiculously shaped tube, you ask?  Well, it was inspired by this, but obviously I’m making a few changes.  For one, I’m crocheting instead of knitting.  I think you probably spotted that one on your own though.  Besides that, I’m not using the same type of yarn specified, and I’m also using a different hook size than their recommended needle size.  I pretty much just saw the picture, read enough of the instructions to get a grasp of the construction, and went off on my own adventure!  I’m using Impeccable worsted weight yarn in Butterscotch, which to me just screams springtime.  This is being made for my oldest (5 1/2 years) and I think she’ll get lots of wear out of it.  It’s dainty enough to wear over a cute little sundress, but still simple enough to throw on with some jeans or khakis.  I’m really excited to see how it looks when it’s done… If it comes together as easily as it should, I may even make one for myself!

I might be cheating, but as I’m sure you’ve also spotted, that’s a magazine and not a book.  It’s called Homeschool Enrichment, and I’ve got a great friend who passes them on to me when she’s done with them.  They always have really great articles, some very practical, some just for pure encouragement or inspiration.  There’s an article I’ve been avoiding though, about how sending your kids outside to play isn’t the same as P.E.   Once I’ve placed my pride aside, I’m sure I’ll give it a read!

In other news, I’m still sticking with my vegetarian diet, which would make this about a solid two weeks now!  I’m feeling really good!  I have to be much more mindful of exactly what I’m eating, something that, I’ll admit, I wasn’t as good at before.  I was more of a snacker.  Pop a snack here, sneak something there…  Never really a completely balanced meal during the day.  By the time dinner came around I’d be starving, over-eat, and then spend the rest of the night doing more snacking.  I’m eating more nutritionally  complete meals now and am finding that I’m not as short on energy and focus as I used to be.  It feels good!

Hope your week wraps up well!

Vegetarianism and other stuffs…

Yes, I’ve decided to embark on a meat free lifestyle for a while.  I wish I could say that I held some strong convictions or real compassion toward the animals, but that’s just not the case.  It all started following a recent doctor’s visit where my blood pressure was a bit high.  I’ll admit, I was a bit shocked.  Although my race almost automatically makes me a target for hypertension, I’m at a healthy weight and consume a reasonably healthy diet.  Reasonably  healthy, meaning we don’t indulge in fast food or much processed junk, but I can get a little… excited on my cookie baking sprees.

Besides that, for whatever reason, going to the doctor makes me sooo nervous! Nervous like, my stomach will be in knots until I’ve made it back to my car!  I’m not sure if that had anything to do with it at all though.  The nurse did check my pressure twice and it was slightly lower the second time around, but the bottom number didn’t budge.  Oddly enough though, just a few days later, Brian Williams had a segment on the Nightly News about how most nurses aren’t taking your blood pressure correctly, only checking one arm (like my nurse did), when they should be checking both.  He also had his doctor correspondent on and she said some people suffer from, I think they called it, “white coat syndrome”, where patients become extremely nervous at doctor visits.  This can result in a spike in your blood pressure!  But, all of this happened well after I’d made my decision.

So here I am, meat-free for nearly a week!  It hasn’t been too bad either.  This was probably the best time for me to embark on this journey seeing as how I’ve been a bit bored with meat lately.  And honestly, good quality meat is expensive!  Besides the healthy benefits, vegetarianism may also be a bit more cost effective.  All the extra money spent trying to make sure my cows ate grass could be saved by just skipping the cow and going straight for the grass myself!  I tell you what though, I wouldn’t mind a strip of applewood bacon…

In other news, I’ve quickly become a homeschooler of two, much sooner than I’d anticipated.  My youngest, Marlee, just made two-years-old in December; maybe she knows that’s a milestone or something, because she’s been in on the schooling ever since.

It was a little tough at first! Naturally, Marlee has a two-year-old’s attention span (approximately 2.2 minutes), and it was hard to keep her occupied with one activity.  I tried having a stash of “special toys” that were only hers and she only got to play with them during school time.  This included some big building blocks, board books, a bucket of beads and spoons, and a white board with a dry erase marker.  She was interested in each item for the above mentioned 2.2 minutes, and then she was back into her normal mischief!  I don’t know what took me so long, but I finally just sat her at the table with Nevaeh (the oldest) and I during the school hour, and that seemed to have done the trick!  I think she really would rather feel like she was participating than having to play alone (right next to us) on the floor.   So, whatever we’re doing, I just have a modified version of the project for her to work on.  She has her own special pencil she gets to use and she even gets to color with the Sharpees (which was a BIG deal, let me tell you).  The adjustments have smoothed themselves out things are going great.  Luckily school only lasts about an hour though!

Nothing about vegetarianism or homeschooling in this photo, just general cuteness!

Yarn Along: The Heel

So, as you can very well see, The Sock now has a heel!  I’m so  excited– I really thought these would end up being arm warmers!  I will admit, I wouldn’t have gotten this far if it wasn’t for YouTube, that’s for sure.  Which makes me wonder, how in the world did we ever get along in life with it?  I wonder what the first knitted sock looked like… Yikes!

Anyhoo, I’ve been watching videos posted by KnitPicks to help me along in the process.  I got all the way through the heel flap on my own, but once it was time to turn the heel, I saw some letter combos in the pattern (ssk, p2tog) that I wasn’t too familiar with!  Short rows!  What a marvelous concept!  I still have to decrease the gusset, but after everything I’ve been through, I’m expecting that to be a breeze.  These socks might be done before our anniversary!

As for books, I’m still taking turns reading through both my latest Sally Clarkson titles, but I’m spending a bit more time with The Mission of Motherhood since my next mom group meeting will be coming up pretty soon.

All in all, it’s been a great week so far on my end!  I hope the same is true for y’all.  Oh yeah, I’ve gone vegetarian for a while!  More on that in another post though.  Know of any good recipes, vegan or vegetarian?  I’ll be doing some more grocery shopping this weekend and would like to try for something a bit more… fun.  So far I’ve had baked ziti (which lasted 3 nights!), a vegetable stir fry, and lots of oatmeal, peanut butter and smoothies!

Newness…

Here’s a few new things that have landed in the shop.  I’m still trying to slowly begin transitioning to more spring time-y, non-apparel-ish items. Bare with me– I seem to have more ideas than I have execution time! Such is life :-)

The book I bought about photographing your handmade crafts is coming in really handy!  For the most part, I guess my photos are still pretty… simple…  But for now, I think that’s how I want them to look.  I’d like to play around with different stagings and maybe even colored backgrounds (eventually) though.

Things are going well on the home front!  After that crazy weekend I had attending the conference I was more than happy to have week that wasn’t the least bit busy.  Here’s a pic of my conference roomies and I:

Have a great weekend everyone!

Yarn Along: Granny Stripes

Well, what an exciting week I’ve had since the last time we “spoke”!  Last Friday and Saturday, I was able to attend Sally Clarkson’s Mom Heart Conference, and it completely  rocked my world!  It was wonderful to be surrounded by so many like-minded women, knowing we were all there for one reason: to be encouraged on this never-ending journey called motherhood.  Although, the over-night stay was pretty sweet too!  I won’t get into everything that happened because I’d be here typing for hours.  But I will share one of the quotes from Sally that really stood out to me: “A woman alone in her ideals is a target for Satan.”  Sooo true!  She used that quote in explaining to us the importance of seeking community with other woman, and not just women on our same path, but women who’ve already gone down the road we’re on– having a group of women around us willing to share their wisdom, speak truth to us, share grace with us, and pray over us on a regular basis.  It was really wonderful and I was blessed to have been able to go!

I was able to get a few books, but this is the one I was most excited to get my hands on:

The book is Seasons of a Mother’s Heart: Heart to Heart Encouragement for Homeschool Moms, again, by Sally Clarkson.  She’s taking over my bookshelf lately!  I’ve only read a tiny bit from the preface so far, but I’m sure the rest will be great.  I’ve had yet to be disappointed by anything she’s written.

That bit of yarn there is the beginning rows of a granny stripe blanket.  I don’t plan on making it too big; it’s only about 4ft wide.  It’ll probably be housed over the back of one of my arm chairs or get tossed across the chaise on my couch.  Just enough to cover a lap or set of shoulders on a chilly evening.  I know the colors aren’t anything to write home about, but I’ve got some serious stash-busting going on with this project.  Plus, I wanted it to be a bit more masculine in color than some of the other things I’ve got going on in my living room.  We’ll see though.  I’ve got lots of scraps to blow threw, so this may end up being a bit more interesting than I’d planned ;-)

P.S. We’re rooting for the Giants to take it all in the Super Bowl.  Eli, along with two other teammates are from New Orleans! GEAUX GIANTS!

P.P.S. This post is participation with Ginny’s yarn along!
